Tour description

A six centre self-guided circular cycling tour from Fishguard to Carmarthen and back on a different route. Includes 7 nights bed and breakfast in en-suite (wherever possible) guesthouse accommodation, 6 days cycling, luggage transfers, route guide and maps.  Hire of a 21 speed all-terrain bicycle would be extra. This 142 mile cycle route starts and finishes in Fishguard and follows the Pembrokeshire coastline to Carmarthen at a nice easy pace allowing you plenty of time to admire the views and visit the impressive castles. Then a challenging 2 day route across the Preseli hills that are quite wild and remote takes you back to Fishguard. Using minor country roads and some lovely traffic-free sections, this biker friendly route can be done in either direction. Fishguard is easily reached by train from London. The route takes you through the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park an ‘area of outstanding natural beauty’. You will enjoy spectacular views over the Irish Sea, sandy beaches and many castles including Pembroke and Carmarthen. The overnight stops include St Davids (made famous by the poet Dylan Thomas) and the popular seaside resort of Tenby.

Sample schedule

START and FINISH: Fishguard in South West Wales

ARRIVAL DAY: Fishguard. Your 1st night's accommodation is in Fishguard. There are many places to eat in the town from fish and chip shops to luxury restaurants.  Overnight: Fishguard, Wales.

DAY ONE: Fishguard to St Davids. Distance approx. 20 miles (32 km). The bikes will be delivered to the guesthouse and help will be given to adjust them. Today’s ride follows a beautiful coast road with lanes leading off to little villages and coves providing pubs and tearooms for refreshments including Abercastle and Trefin. Your destination on this section is St Davids where there is a cathedral and the ruins of the Bishop’s Palace. Britain’s smallest city, St Davids has a vibrant town centre with art galleries, shops, cafés and restaurants for an evening meal. Overnight: St Davids, Wales.

DAY TWO: St Davids to Haverfordwest. Distance approx. 20 miles (32 km). Leaving St Davids the route heads east to Newgate where it follows close to the coastline of St Brides Bay. The splendid sandy beach is very popular with holidaymakers and one of the best surfing areas on the Pembrokeshire coast. At Broad Haven the route heads inland leaving the dramatic seascapes behind you to your next overnight stop at Haverfordwest. This large town has a magnificent castle and museum to visit with plenty of places to obtain your evening meal. Overnight: Haverfordwest, Wales.

DAY THREE: Haverfordwest to Tenby. Distance approx. 24 miles (38 km). A traffic free section takes you out of Haverfordwest along the Brunel Cycle Route to Pembroke. Pembroke Castle is well worth a visit. This well preserved castle has great views over Milford Haven and would be a good place to have a picnic on the lawns. Heading east on a minor country road it is not long before you reach your destination for today, Tenby, where there is another castle. This pastel-painted seaside town is also a very popular tourist destination with a wide range of places for you to have an excellent evening meal. Overnight: Tenby, Wales.

DAY FOUR: Tenby to Carmarthen. Distance approx. 33 miles (53 km). This is the longest ride of the tour making this a challenging but extremely enjoyable day of biking. Hugging the coastline of Carmarthen Bay to Amroth Castle the route then heads inland with a couple of stiff climbs before descending into Laugharne. There is another castle here and the boathouse where Dillon Thomas lived.  This would be a good spot to have lunch. A delightful loop takes you inland to cross the river Taf at St Clears.  This rural final section ends in the large town of Camarthern. Visitor attractions include Camarthern Castle and a roman amphitheatre. This impressive city has many cafés, restaurants and pubs to enjoy a celebratory evening meal. Overnight: Carmarthen, Wales.

DAY FIVE: Carmarthen to Crymych. Distance approx. 24 miles (38 km). Heading north out of Carmarthen it is not long before you start to climb into the Preseli hills.  Your efforts are rewarded by the breathtaking views back over Carmarthen Bay. Following a quiet country road with very few amenities, you will need to carry enough food and drink with you. Cycling through this delightful rural part of West Wales is tough but on the right day a never forgotten bike ride. This undulating section ends at the village of Crymyth which will provide your accommodation.  There is a pub here to enjoy an evening meal. Overnight: Crymych, Wales.

DAY SIX: Crymych to Fishguard. Distance approx. 22 miles (35 km). Staying high for most of today’s ride provides magnificent views over the Pembrokeshire countryside and on a clear day most of Wales. There are many ancient stone circles to see on this section, with pubs at Rosebush and Tufton providing an opportunity for a lunch stop. A short final ascent takes you to the highest point of the route followed by a steep descent into Fishguard. The bikes will be picked up from the guesthouse while you enjoy another night in Fishguard to celebrate completion of the tour. Check out the restaurant options for your final evening meal of the tour. Overnight: Fishguard, Wales.

DEPARTURE DAY: This tour finishes after breakfast.

Hi Richard, I wanted to thank you for the map and information that was awaiting my arrival in Chipping Campden. The map was well used....I didn't make too many wrong turns! I throughly enjoyed myself and was very lucky with the weather, it was very chilly and quite hilly! The accommodation was great in both places. Everyone was most helpful. The bike was also very comfy. I would use your company again and will recommend it to my friends. Thanks, Susan. Sent from my iPhone
