Tour description

A self-guided inn to inn cycle tour following the ‘Way of the Roses’ route across Lancashire and Yorkshire. Includes; 2 nights bed and breakfast in guesthouse accommodations, 3 days cycling with transfer of luggage each day, tour details and phone app navigation. Transport back to Morecambe for you and your bikes at the end of the tour or bike rental is not included but can be added.

The ‘Way of the Roses’ is the latest exciting coast to coast cycle route across Northern England. Starting in Morecambe the route uses quiet country roads and cycle ways through Lancashire and Yorkshire. Signs marking the route display the red and white roses of these two iconic counties, keeping you on the right track. You will follow the lovely Lune Valley, ride through the Forest of Bowland as well as Nidderdale; all areas of ‘Outstanding Natural Beauty’. You will encounter some steep climbs over the Pennine Hills but your efforts will be rewarded with great views and a long down-hill ride. Descending into the Yorkshire Dales to the historic sites of Fountains Abbey and York City the route becomes much flatter through the Yorkshire Wolds before reaching the coast at Bridlington.

Sample schedule

TOUR START: Morecambe, Lancashire.

DAY ONE: Morecambe to Grassington Distance approx. 50 miles (80 km). You can travel to Morecambe by train or car.  Car parking can be arranged. A very flat traffic-free section provides a nice easy start from Morecambe promenade through Lancaster along the river Lune. Then minor country roads take you gently up the Lune Valley through villages like Hornby, Clapham and the larger town of Settle. Having a break here would be recommended before tackling the toughest hill on the route, followed by  a great downhill ride before reaching your overnight stop at Grassington. There are pubs, bars and restaurants for your evening meal and a few pints will have been well earned. Overnight: Grassington, N. Yorkshire.

DAY TWO: Grassington to Pocklington. Distance approx. 77 miles (124 km). With one or two hills at the beginning of this section the route then becomes very flat with plenty of places to stop for refreshments. Leaving the Pennine Hills behind, the route passes through the pretty town of Pateley Bridge and the larger town of Ripon. There are many historical sites on today’s ride such as Fountains Abbey, Ripon Cathedral and of course York Minster. The route takes you past the impressive minster before leaving York to the next overnight stop at Pocklington. Your evening meal can be obtained from hotels and pubs in the town centre. Overnight: Pocklington, Yorkshire.

DAY THREE: Pocklington to Bridlington. Distance approx. 43 miles (69 km). Today is the easiest day of the tour allowing time for you to be transported back to Morecambe after completing the route.  A minor road rises onto the Yorkshire Wolds before sloping gently back down to the village of Hutton Cranswick and the town of Driffield. At Burton Agnes the route rises again onto the Woldgate Roman Road giving your first sight of the North Sea before descending to your destination, Bridlington. There are plenty of places to eat on the seafront before you and your bikes are picked up to be transported back to Morecambe.

Hi Richard, I wanted to thank you for the map and information that was awaiting my arrival in Chipping Campden. The map was well used....I didn't make too many wrong turns! I throughly enjoyed myself and was very lucky with the weather, it was very chilly and quite hilly! The accommodation was great in both places. Everyone was most helpful. The bike was also very comfy. I would use your company again and will recommend it to my friends. Thanks, Susan. Sent from my iPhone
